Never Let Me Go. Kazuo Ishiguro

Never Let Me Go. Kazuo Ishiguro

I picked up this book in the airport on my recent trip out to Gozo. I chose it because I'd been desperate to see the film version at the cinema, but just hadn't got round to it.  I'm sure whether you've seen the film, read the book, or not, most of you will know the basic plot from all the recent press surrounding the the movie.  Well somehow, other than a few trailers, I'd managed to avoid hearing much about the story at all.  And having now read the book, I'm very glad that I had been oblivious to it all!

A lot of this book seems to be the charming yet simple story of children who you know from the start are obviously different, growing up in an English boarding school in the 1990's.  Again, there is something very different about England and the school as they are described by the main character, an ex-Hailsham student and now 'carer', Kathy.  Told entirely from Kathy's view point, we are brought into her world as she relates her experiences to the reader as though we are already know her world and have had similar experiences ourselves, albeit not as a student of the prestigious Hailsham School.  Kathy shares stories of her childhood, the love and strife in her relationships with friends Tommy and Ruth, and her ambiguous present job as a carer, but never quite gives us the full picture of her limited existence as she drops in terms such as donations, guardians, completing, carers and galleries.

Without saying much more, this book is definitely a page turner.  Although you get an inkling as to the situation Kathy and her fellow students are in, you find yourself desperately seeking confirmation of theories and answers to the many questions both you and the characters are asking.  What exactly are these donations?  Where did these students come from?  What are the 'guardians' preparing them for?

What is slowly revealed leads to a realisation of a situation that is in reality horrific and morally disturbing.  The frustrating aspect, like with all great books, is that just as the story concludes, you have a full understanding and a ready to enjoy the story aware of all the facts, it ends.

Have you read Never Let Me Go?  Seen the film?

What did you think?

Just over two weeks ago my sister gave birth to the absolutely gorgeous little Sophia Charlotte.  My sister, her partner and my lovely niece live on the beautiful Mediterranean island of Gozo.  Here are a few of the pictures from my trip out there last week to visit them all.

I love this island, and even more so now that there's an extra little lady to visit!
Only a few weeks till my next visit.  Yay!

Have you ever been to Gozo or Malta?
Let me know in the comments below.

When we finished uni my housemates and I decided to celebrate by going on holiday to Barcelona.  It was an absolutely amazing holiday, we got up to all sorts!! Now we only see each other a few times a year - with us being spread all across the UK, and even further afield!  I miss you guys!

P.S.  I don't think this photo is mine, I've had it on my computer for AGES but it could actually be my bessie, Charlotte's.  Hope you don't mind me using it dude!  :)

Hooray!  The sun was out and you could almost describe the weather as warm today!  I was actually able to wear an outfit suited to spring when out n about shopping in town!

Top:  H&M
Cardigan:  New Look
Trousers & Belt:  Primark
Shoes:  Primark
Earrings:  Warehouse (I think, they were a present)

I picked up a few things in town so thought I'd share them on here :)

(Top to Bottom)

Scarves:  Primark
I actually first saw the yellow print scarf in Fleur De Force's recent haul video on YouTube, I thought it was pretty at the time but absolutely fell for it after seeing it in the flesh.  The mixture of animal and abstract / geometric print is perfect for spring 2011.  I also loved the floral scarf, it's over-sized so perfect when it's chilly!

Heels:  Primark
These sweet little kitten heels have been in Primark for a while now and finally decided to buy them!  They claim to have a comfy insole, we'll see after a day at work or night out!

Vest Top:  Topshop
A fab staple for summer!

T-Shirt:  H&M
The deep orange-red colour is stunning and another perfect item for spring 2011.  I included a small picture of this top on as it looks really wide hung up but on it's just nicely over-sized for a casual look.

Bracelets:  H&M
The two lovely little bracelets on the left are a great, very cheap and very cheerful copies of the Whistles cord and cube bracelets.  I bought the cream plaited bracelet to wear with the Whistle copies.  These came in a massive variety of colours and it took me absolutely ages go choose!

Angled Brush:  H&M
Another brush for blush / contour always come in handy!  This feels like great quality for the price, £2.99!

Let me know what you think of my recent purchases in the comments below!

This cat had loads of personality and was just chilling out enjoying the stunning view of The Grand Harbour, Valletta, Malta.  I absolutely love Valletta and try to get there every time I visit Gozo, Malta's beautiful sister Island.

I was inspired to post a random photo from Malta after the birth of my gorgeous niece, Sophia.  She was born on Gozo 11th March 2011, this time next week I'm going to be flying out there to visit her and I'm SO excited!  Sophia is such a lovely little baby!

I haven't been to a hairdresser in AGES - after having a few near on disasters last year!  However, after a gradual awaking as to how bad my split ends and damaged hair actually is, I finally decided to book in for a hair cut on Saturday!  In preparation I thought I'd post a few inspirational images here.  My hair is just below my armpits at the moment, I know that my hair won't suddenly grow a couple of inches or suddenly become super glossy and wavy, but I just want my hair to look healthier with a few choppy layers in it that will give it movement, body and look great when I put waves in it...  wow, did that sounded like a L'oreal advert or what?! :)  Well anyway, perhaps I'll try a soft fringe too..

I mentioned in an earlier post that my boyfriend went on a ski/ snowboarding holiday with some friends.  Well, he made this video to document the trip and I think that it's so good I just wanted to share it with you all!  It is a video full of boys being boys and so is quite different to my usual girlie posts, but I hope that you enjoy it!

The beyond stunning Galeries Lafayette.  I was actually distracted from shopping by the beauty and grandeur of this Parisian building.

If there's one thing that Glamour Magazine does well it's the freebie!  I'm sure I wasn't the only one who bought 3 copies of the magazine when they collaborated with Benefit to give away the Benefit Eye Bright, Benefit Bad Girl & Benefit It stick!

In celebration of 10 years of Glamour, for the UK April 2011 issue Glamour Magazine has teamed up with Clinique to give away a full range of products to readers!

Take The Day Off Makeup Remover For Lids, Lashes & Lips
Superbalm Moisturising Gloss
High Impact Lip Colour SPF15 Lipstick
7 Day Scrub Cream Rinse Off
Liquid Face Soap
Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief
Dramatically Different Lotion
Long Last Glosswear
High Impact Deluxe Mascara
All About Eyes

With a list like that I'm sure you won't be surprised to hear that I was stood in the shop for quite a while deciding on which I wanted!  I'm a big Clinique fan and I've tried all these products apart from the the lip products and mascara.  I opted for All About Eyes because I've bought this a few times and ran out of my last tub a few weeks ago.  This cream is super effective. I've discussed my skin-type before and although I'm prone to oiliness I generally have dry skin around the eyes.  All About Eyes gives that instant moisture boost that soothes the eyes straight away, I love it!  I'm yet to be convinced that any cream really reduces fine lines for good but I'm sure this does mask or fill them in some way for the time that it's on the skin.

I think I'm going to have pick up another copy of this magazine, I really fancy the getting the Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief.  I love the feeling of drenching my skin in moisture and this moisture really does this!
The Random Photo is a weekly post that I'd like to introduce to my blog.  The idea is to share some very random pictures and hopefully an insight into what I get up to.  Most of the pictures will be ones that have been saved on my computer for some time so I'll probably have to add a bit context.

I hope you enjoy and let me know what you think!

A few years ago I celebrated my birthday with a trip up Newcastle to visit some friends and have a good old night out on the toon.  I went to uni in Newcastle but at this point had been graduated for nearly a year.  Well to cut to the chase, we were obviously trying to replicate our uni days, most of the the pictures from the night were either blurred or of the floor ...like this!

Happy International Women's Day!

Tuesday 8th March 2011 marks 100 years of International Women's day

I want to dedicate this day to my fabulous Mum and Sister, they are my best friends and always there for me.

I really can't wait to see you both soon, as well as the new little baby girl joining our family!

Let me know about the special ladies in your life :)
Today I visited the York Designer Outlet where there is an amazing discount store, The Cosmetics Company Store.  Needles to say I picked up a few things...

Bobbie Brown Eyeshadow

MAC Eye Shadow - Cut To Fit
A gorgeous red-bronze toned shadow from last years Pret-A-Papier collection.  I'd compare this to a lighter version of the popular Antiqued by MAC.

Bobbi Brown Eyeshadow Palette

Bobbi Brown Color Strips Palette
This fab little palette will be perfect for carrying my handbag as it's an amazing compact and durable design.  In the discount store the empty palette itself was only £3.50 and came with a mini dual ended lip and eye shadow brush.  There were a number of lip colour strips available but I decided to to select two eyeshadow strips to go into my palette; the Bonfire Eye Shadow Strip (top) and the Petal Eye Shadow Strip (bottom).

Bobbi Brown Eyeshadow

Bonfire Eye Shadow Strip
(L-R) Bone (matte), Cafe Creme (sparkle), Bonfire (metallic), Cognac (metallic), Caviar (matte).
These colours are my absolute favourite shades to wear as I love the gold-bronzey look.  Bone looks slightly lighter in the picture than it is in real life (see the above picture for a comparison) but it's the perfect staple off-white to use as a base and to highlight the brow bone.  Cafe Creme is an absolutely stunning sheer and subtly sparkly lilac-silver.  Bonfire is an incredibly rich golder than gold shade - gorgeous!  Cognac, perhaps my favourite, is actually a deeper, more mahogany version of MAC's Cut To Fit that I bought separately, they will actually work really well together to produce shading and depth to a look.  Finally Caviar, another staple colour, is a great matte black that's always handy to have close by!

Bobbi Brown Eyeshadow

Petal Eye Shadow Strip
(L-R) Ivory (matte), Gold Rush (Sparkle), Petal (matte), Heather Mauve (shimmer), Mahoganay (matte).
Ivory again is a staple bright white, I don't often use such white eye shadows but this would be great to high-light the inner corner of the eye.  Gold Rush is an absolutely stunning shadow that could add that subtle shimmer to any look.  I think the pretty pink Petal will be the least used colour in this palette but it's not particularly bright so I'll probably use this as a highlight or to brighten the inner corners.  Heather Mauve is a lovely slightly more silver, slightly less sparkly version Cafe Creme, above.  The final shade in the Petal palette is a great and versatile matte dark brown, Mahogany.

As is customary with all purchases I make, I like to try them out straight away, so I thought I'd add a picture of what I created with these new shadows... please ignore the bad lighting and bad photography, the pictures were taken this evening on my iPhone!

How I created this look:
Mac Cut To Fit all over the lid, bringing it to just below the eyebrows and running it below the lower lashes.
Bobbi Brown Bone as a highlight below the eyebrows and as a base in the inner corner of the eye.
Bobbie Brown Heather Mauve layered with Bobbie Brown Cafe Creme on top on the inner half of the lid.
Bobbie Brown Gold Rush in the inner corner of the eye.
MAC Black Track to line the upper lashes.
Barry M Super Soft Eye Crayon in Black along the water and tight lines.
Max Factor False Lash Effect mascara in Black.
Mix Bobbie Brown Caviar and Mahogany to fill in eyebrows.

This look was actually inspired by Jennifer Lopez's make up at the American Idol Finalist Party.  Although her outfit was a little random, her make-up looked stunning as usual.  Check out the pictures here.

Please note, that because these were from a discount store and so from old collections (both I think are spring 2010) they're are probably no longer available in the MAC and Bobbi Brown current lines, but check out their websites for similar shades.
